Scoliosis is an unnatural sideways curve of the spine with rotation. This rotational component makes scoliosis three-dimensional. When the spine bends and rotates, it does so into the concavity of the scoliosis. The structural aspect of scoliosis is what is progressive. It is in its nature to worsen over time, either as a result of growth in the adolescent stage or in the adult stage as a result of compression or gravity over time. When we look at the immune system and the way it functions, it's your first line of defense against foreign invaders, injury, and disease. It's made up of a vast network of proteins and receptor cells and remembers everything it comes into contact with in case it re-enters the body at a future time. A healthy immune system equals a great ability to fight off invaders and to adapt to the environment on a day to day basis. An unhealthy immune system means the body doesn't have the ability to recognize and fight off invaders, and this ability weakens the body and its ability to adapt to its environments. Scoliosis is a structural condition, and there are links being explored on the connection between scoliosis and the immune system. It is difficult to determine if a scoliotic curvature is more likely to develop in a person who already has a weak immune system or is the weakened immune system a potential complication of scoliosis. What has yet to be understood is which way this effect takes place. What we do know is that scoliosis is multifactorial, meaning there are different variables that can affect different people at different levels from person to person. Links have been found between hormones, bone density, BMI, even structural congenial components within the nerve system, spinal cord, and brainstem. Since there are so many different factors associated with the causation of scoliosis, it is considered to be idiopathic or multifactorial. There is a study on idiopathic scoliosis using Zebrafish, and it suggested that there is a connection between scoliosis and a weakening of the immune system, especially around the curve. It shows there is inflammation to the immune cells around where the curve is located. This suggests there is a link between immune system information and the initiation and progression of scoliosis. We know scoliosis can also affect the immune system because scoliosis isn't curable since we do not know what is causing it. It can cause an extra challenge or stress in someone's life. Stress can trigger a release of Cortisol which is the stress hormone. Cortisol increase over time is linked to inflammation. There are associations and indirect connections between scoliosis and immune function. When scoliosis progresses, the effects can be more widespread than just to the spine or muscles or neuromuscular systems, which can lead to malfunctions which will lead to effects that can affect the health and wellbeing of the body. The best way to deal with the possible connection between scoliosis and the immune system is to deal with the scoliosis itself. By the time we deal with what has caused the scoliosis, the curve has become structural. If you were to reverse the cause, the curve is not resolving on its own. So regardless of the cause, once the scoliosis becomes structural, you have to address the problem. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we customize proactive treatment plans to stop scoliosis progression, reduce the curve and help you have a healthy functioning body.
