This tape was an incredible find. Or maybe not. You tell me. Read on... Let me preface this story by relating that I am big Tim Rose fan, and have been for decades. That being said, I am no expert, and I welcome any positive information that yall can relay in the comments. OK here goes... In the basement of an abandoned studio in northern CT I found the tape that you see below. It is a 7.5 IPS compilation of various early TIM ROSE bootlegs, as well as his two early Columbia 45s. Some of the material on side 1 of the tape (the CBS England Studio Demos) has surfaced before, albeit never commercially released (AFAIK). HOWEVER... there seems to be no trace, anywhere, of the material labeled "J.A.C. Recordings." Besides this tape in my hand here. Here's where it gets interesting. The man who owned this tape, now deceased, also had in his possession several photos of Tim Rose in the studio that I have never seen before. He had been a New Yorker and he had been a professional recording engineer in the 60s/early 70s, so it does not seem unreasonable that he could have worked with Rose in the 60s. This recording is just awesome. It's a completely different arrangement of the song, with a completely different storyline. The sound is just great, moody chiming guitars with thunderous drumkit. What makes this all even STRANGER is that it was recorded to this tape from mono vinyl! Given the high level of surface noise, it seems possible that it could have been made from an acetate. What a mystery this all is. As a long time Rose fan, this was a real gift to find, and I am thrilled to be able to share it with yall. There are several more tunes from this same session on this tape. If this youtube video gets some love I will load and post the rest of them. And please, if you know anything for sure about this recording or this session, please post in the comment. Thanks for reading and thanks for listening.
