Backstory to the song (and apologies in advance for the wordiness): Many years ago, some close friends of mine adopted two boys when they were around six months old. I’ve had the privilege of watching them grow into fine young men. One of them met his high school sweetheart at a young age. Together, they bought a house in their early 20s and seemed set for a wonderful life. They married in 2017 and were planning to start a family when Covid struck. Sadly, that was when the wife changed her mind about both children and marriage. The relationship fell apart, leading to divorce, and he was left devastated. For a long time, he had no interest in future relationships. Meanwhile, across town, a young woman was going through heartbreak of her own. After an eight-year engagement, she discovered her fiancé had been unfaithful. She too decided she was finished with relationships. Eighteen months later, mutual friends—who knew both of them but had never introduced them —suggested they go out for dinner. Neither was keen; both felt “done” with love. But eventually, to appease their friends, they reluctantly agreed to a blind date. Much later, both told me that when they first saw each other at the restaurant, they secretly hoped the other was their date. Dinner went well, and when the evening ended, they stood in the car park talking for hours. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, they are still together. They have a 2-year-old son, another on the way and couldn’t be happier. I wrote this song so that its meaning could be heard as if sung from one to the other.
