Billygoat weed - Chick weed - Goatweed - Whiteweed - Mentrasto Billygoat weed, also known as Ageratum conyzoides, is a plant species in the Asteraceae family. It grows upright or lying down and can reach up to 120 cm tall. The roots are located at the base of the plant, while the stems are hairy and often branched with multiple compound flowers at the tips. It is also known as chick weed, goatweed, whiteweed, and mentrasto. The leaves of the conyzoides are alternate or opposite, located mainly at the bottom of the plant. They are egg-shaped with a heart or rounded base, obtuse or tapered tips, 2-10 cm long and 0.5-5 cm wide, with serrated edges and both sides covered in long hair with glands on the underside. The flowers of the billygoat weed gather in terminal panicles with three or more cusps. The panicle stems are 6-8 mm long and consist of 60-70 individual flowers at the end of the hairy stems with 2-3 oval-shaped leaf pads. The crowns are narrow and tube-like and can be white or purple in color. The plant produces achenium fruit in a square shape, 2 mm long, with scaly hair and white in color. It flowers and fruits throughout the year, producing up to 40,000 seeds per plant and is considered a highly invasive weed in plantations. Billygoat weed is prevalent throughout the tropics, growing in a variety of locations such as dry fields, house yards, roadsides, embankments, waterfronts, shrub areas, and up to an altitude of 3000 m.
