This review covers the memoirs of Manfred Thorn, who served as a Panzer IV driver from 1943, with the Leibstandarte SS-Adolf Hitler. He recounts his experiences in this book, starting in the second half of 1943, moving through their brief time in Italy, then back to the Eastern Front for the hard fought winter of 1943 / 1944. Their move to Belgium for their refit in the early Spring of 1944, before being sent to the Normandy front. Manfred was one of those that made it back across the Seine and then he took part in the Ardennes Offensive, being witness to one of the most controversial incidents of that battle, the Malmedy Crossroads; that became a life defining moment for Manfred and one that still leaves a bitter legacy for him today. Following that, he moved to the Hungarian area and fought the Soviets once again, moving into Austria in the closing weeks of the war. At the Enns River, he was one of those that had to drive his Panzer IV over the edge and into the river, to prevent its use by the Soviets, who were nearby - a tank that had been delivered not long before, fresh from the factory. His stint as a POW began a long and difficult road, which including being put on trial and receiving wounds whilst a POW that still impact his health and well being today.
