Myanmar junta airstrike in Rakhine state | Radio Free Asia (RFA)

Residents grieve for the dead after a Myanmar junta air strike on Mrauk U in Rakhine state. At least 12 people were killed in the overnight bombing, witnesses told the AFP news agency. The Arakan Army — the local ethnic armed group — said five children were among those killed and 20 more people were wounded. AFP was unable to reach the junta for comment on the air strike, which residents say happened around 11:00 pm. The junta controls only three out of the 17 townships in Rakhine, where it is battling to gain ground ahead of elections in December. The Arakan Army has pledged to block the junta's election in areas under its control. Both the military and the AA have been accused of atrocities in Rakhine, where around 20 percent of the population has been displaced by the war. Rakhine state has been blockaded by Myanmar's military as it battles ethnic fighters in a civil war that has consumed the country since the junta toppled the democratic government in a 2021 coup.
