Laos: pathways to prosperity

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has seen remarkable economic growth in recent years but despite this, nearly one in five people are still below the poverty line. Small scale farmers face severe challenges including poor infrastructure, declining soil fertility, limited irrigation and poor access to technical support and financing, all of which hinder their ability to improve their livelihoods and ensure food security. By improving rural infrastructure, IFAD and the government of Laos are connecting rural areas to urban markets, unlocking high-value markets for their products and raw materials.
