This is a famous flute solo by French composer Bizet which also appears on orchestral audition occasionally. It is the third movement of the L'arlèsienne suite. Arlès is a city in southern France and with "-sienne" meaning "a girl from the city of Arlès". It was written for Alphonse Daudet's drama under the same name. (Arlès was also a city where the great painter Van Gough had stayed in!) This is a piece that requires absolute control on the instrument i.e. smooth crossing between intervals, soft high notes, intonation, breath control, articulations, colours etc. and of course that is why it is asked in an orchestral audition. Again, fundamentals are the keys of technique here. Harmonics practices would be a great help! Breaths should be planned ahead but bear in mind that it is not a competition on who got the longest breath. It is about making great music. Rather breathe one more time than producing bad tone or intonation. It also helps me to think about a southern French girl wandering in the city of Arlès too!
