Scribbling In Old Books: Annotations and The Stories They Can Tell Us, with Hannah Barker and Jane Gallagher. This talk will explore what jottings and notes in books can tell us about life in 18th and 19th century northern English towns. Hannah Barker (Professor of British History) and Jane Gallagher (Head of Digital Special Collections and Services at the Rylands) will look at a variety of examples from both the Rylands and other libraries and archives, focussing on the evidence they contain about religious faith. Although scribbling in books is almost always frowned upon today, historians are more than happy when people did it 200 years ago because of what it reveals about previous owners and their lives. Hannah Barker is the lead Investigator on the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded projects 'Faith in the Town: Lay Religion, Urbanisation and Industrialisation in England, 1740-1830' and 'Unlocking the Mary Hamilton Papers' – both of which make extensive use of the Rylands’ collections.
