Hello everyone, in this video, I've decided to cover Void Linux installation, as well as various optimization tips which should be able to help speed up old low-end hardware. I've tested these tweaks and they've helped a lot, I'm using Lenovo B570 laptop, which is very old, and it managed to record and render this video, which should be enough proof as to how much these tweaks can help. Hopefully, some of these tips will be helpful to viewers looking to improve performance of their old laptops/PC's. Thanks for watching. Tip: On PC, CTRL + left or right arrow key can quickly switch between chapters. Additional suggestions for optimization: If zstd compressor is not performing well, switch to the faster lz4 compressor which doesn't compress as well but is more performant; Enable shinker for zswap. Refer to the zswap section of the video, and in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT add zswap.shrinker_enabled=1. This will free up memory used by zswap when system is under memory pressure; Enable the acpid service which handles ACPI events. To enable it, type the following in the terminal: `sudo ln -s /etc/sv/acpid /var/service/`; Install and test RAM with memtest86+. This is crucial for testing RAM if one is experiencing complete system freezes. I've experienced this a few times and have installed memtest with: `sudo xbps-install -S memtest86+`, after which memtest86+ got added to the grub boot entry list, and I was presented with over 100 RAM errors in about 15 minutes. It is always worth checking out RAM state just to be sure everything is okay when it comes to hardware; For the `bfq` IO scheduler, setting the `low_latency` parameter to `0` could significantly help with throughput.
