Six people have been arrested in Spain as part of the investigation into The Family, Ireland’s largest organised crime group. Meanwhile, Gardaí have also confirmed a sixth man has been detained in Ireland as part of the probe. Five members, including the leader of the outfit and two high-ranking lieutenants, as well as two others, were taken into custody following dawn raids on their homes in West Dublin on Monday. Guardia Civil and Gardaí coordinated raids in Ireland and Spain to make the arrests and Europol confirmed the further six arrests today. They said that while their communication method was “sophisticated” their drug smuggling activities, which involved trafficking cocaine and marijuana across Europe were “simplistic”.
