The size is a little smaller and the pace a lot slower, but these drivers aged six to 16 years are just as competitive as their older and larger counterparts. Their ponies are shetlands, which measure up to 10.2 hands. They compete in organised races at registered harness racing tracks and at some local shows. The drivers register a racing name for their ponies and also racing colours with the Queensland Junior Harness Racing Association. The safety of all drivers whilst on the track is very important, so drivers and ponies must attend training sessions and trial to the Stewards satisfaction, before being allowed to compete in a race. Ponies must trot. If they break gait and are not sufficiently restrained, the pony can be relegated in finishing order and the driver reprimanded or suspended. Drivers race for trophies, prizes or vouchers and for as little as $100 a sponsor can be involved in supporting these youngsters, who are the trainers and drivers of the future. Horsemanship and sportsmanship are expected from the drivers at all times and it's great to see a young driver coming down the straight with a big smile, no matter where they finish. The Association is like a big family with all members getting on well together and take pride in all accolades received for the presentation and behaviour of young drivers.
