Near the beginning of the year, when members of Standale Reformed Church in Grand Rapids planned a food drive for November 1, they didn’t expect it to be the first day that SNAP benefits ran out. Organizers said they could really feel the increased need, as the line of cars was much longer than it usually is. Beth Gerst, who coordinates the drive with Feeding America, said it was the most people her church has ever served.
