Dolphins are pretty amazing animals. They are highly intelligent, all over the world, and successful enough to live long lives in some pretty harsh environments. The bottlenose dolphin for example can live over 40 years while the orca can live to 70-80! Living in social groups that can range from 5 to several hundred, these mammals have qualities we would do well to imitate in the workforce. Just think of it, we would like to like long lives too, yet we face a lot of potential risk at jobsites. the fact is we spend much of our days facing various risk and hazards. Just like dolphins have to adapt to stay safe from predators, things we face, machinery, heights, electricity…are the predators from which we need to protect ourselves from. Analyzing the methods dolphins use to stay safe can help us see where we can imitate and keep ourselves safe. At the job-site, it’s often all too easy to look the other way. You see a fellow worker attempt something without the right PPE on, climb a ladder too high, or cut corners to save time, what do you do? Often, we do get the urge to say something, but come up with reasons to not speak up. Our mind runs away thinking: “he knows what he is doing”, or “she has always done it that way and has never had a problem”. That type of thinking is a learned behavior. Naturally, we look out for each other. Our first reaction is to help one another. If you find that you have learned the opposite behavior, take a moment to consider the dolphin. Dolphins exhibit some of the most complex and advanced social behaviors in the animal kingdom and stay alive through applying behaviors that protect the safety of each individual. • The larger adult males often roam the periphery of the pod, keeping an eye out for danger and helping to protect the weaker individuals. • They use what is known as “scouting behavior” where one dolphin will investigate unfamiliar territories or a nearby object and then report back to the pod if it is safe, effectively identifying hazards. • Dolphins also learn behaviors such as places to avoid, how to best use the group to attack potentially harmful prey. • They teach these skills to other members of the pod. If a dolphin enters a new pod, that dolphin needs to adapt to the pods learned behaviors to be successful. Dolphins do these things to ensure their success. They are able to live long lives because they look out for each other and keep learning new behaviors that keep them alive. So you might be wondering how can we imitate the dolphin and ensure we keep ourselves and other safe at work? The answer is Behavior Based Safety. Through the application of Behavior Based Safety, you are able to influence behaviors to maintain a safe workplace. This proven method has been used by companies around the world to adopt safe working practices. A safe group, or pod in dolphin terms, will be more productive, have less turnover, and boost employee morale. It is a process that constantly advances through learned behaviors and implementing the best safety practices. this type of approach utilizes frontline employees with the support of the company's safety leaders. Setting goals, providing reinforcement, and then offering feedback is an effective way of changing targeted behaviors. Implementing a BBS program can change and improve your business in several important ways. OSHAcampus.com offers a Behavior Based Safety Certification Program, which gives you the tools to properly conduct safety observations, the best way to approach improper behavior, and how to guide employees through safe work practices.
