The trademark carved with a sharp tool below the foot of the red-figured volute krater dated 510-500 BC, found in a unspecified location in the Arezzo countryside and made by the famous Euphronios, is significant. Euphronios is among the most important painters and innovators of the Athenian craft circles between the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th century BC. The mark is similar to others on Attic vases mainly found in Vulci and can be interpreted as an Etruscan monogram, to be read za or az, perhaps the initial of a person's name, as Zamaie. Its function is therefore that of an Etruscan merchant trademark who worked in the Greek market either by buying directly from the Athenian shops when the brand is isolated in the vase as in this case or buying products from other merchants when the mark is associated with any previous carved. Vulci was to be the privileged place of this intermediary and from here it is likely that the krater of Euphronios left to reach its last owner. Voice: Melanie Neu (Spazio Seme) Text: Andrea Gaucci
