Blackburn signed Ian Pearce as an 18 year old from Chelsea back in October 1993 for a fee of £300k. Pearce initially started out as a centre forward and played a few games upfront for Rovers, before making the centre back position his own as his Rovers' career developed. With Rovers gunning for the title and equipped with serious firepower upfront, Pearce's game time in his debut season was limited. The 1993/94 season saw Pearce make only 9 appearances in total with almost all of them coming as a substitute. That said, Pearce did manage to score on his Rovers debut in a League cup tie away at Shrewsbury in November 1993. He also scored an important winning goal at Upton Park in the League in April 1994, a win which took Rovers into Europe the following season. Pearce's most memorable and fruitful campaign in a Rovers shirt was to come in the 1994/95 season, with Pearce transitioning to centre back and forming a steely defensive partnership with Colin Hendry as Rovers took home the Premier League trophy. Pearce's appearances that season were sparse to begin with, however he fought his way into the starting 11 and became a mainstay at the heart of the defence during the crucial months of January - May 1995. Pearce made 28 Premier League appearances in the title winning season, completing the full 90 minutes in 22 of those games. Aged 20 at the time, a young Ian Pearce slotted in admirably at centre back and didn't look out of place. The fact that a 20 year old defender took to the challenge of trying to win a Premier League and didn't look out place doing so, is the biggest compliment that can be paid to Ian Pearce. The remainder of Pearce's time at Rovers was, sadly, hampered by injury and he did not feature as regularly as previously. In the 1995/96 season, Pearce had made 12 Premier League appearances and 8 in the cup competitions, when he suffered a bad ankle injury during a defeat at Everton in November 1995. This injury would effectively rule him out of action for close to 14 months. Upon his return from injury in 1997, Rovers had players like Henning Berg and Chris Coleman vying for centre back roles alongside Colin Hendry and the club also signed Stephane Henchoz soon after. Pearce was subsequently allowed to leave Rovers and sign for West Ham in September 1997 for a fee of around £2m. Ian Pearce is fondly remembered for the crucial role he played in the Rovers' defence in the 1994/95 season. A role which led to him and Blackburn Rovers becoming champions in May, while at the same time helping to make Uncle Jack's dream come true. Pearce made 78 appearances for Rovers in total across the years 1993-97, scoring three goals. Here are those goals.
