The Other Song | Dir: Saba Dewan | In Solidarity: A Festival of films by Rahul Roy and Saba Dewan

"The Other Song" is a 2009 documentary film directed by Saba Dewan that journeys across Varanasi, Lucknow and Muzzafarpur, India. The film traces the lost traditions and the culture of tawaifs (courtesans of North India), particularly, through a song by Rasoolan Bai, "Lagat karejwa ma chot, phool gendwa na maar" and its lesser known, earlier version "Lagat jobanwa ma chot, phool gendwa na maar" recorded in 1935 Gramophone recording. Weaving the past with the present, the film spans between personal stories as it interacts with historical events, ultimately, leading to the decline of a great art form. This online screening is a part of "In Solidarity: A Festival of films by Rahul Roy and Saba Dewan" to express solidarity with Rahul Roy and Saba Dewan, who are currently being targetted by the government of India for their substantive community work to stand with victims of lynching and a communal pogrom in Delhi, to stand with migrant workers who have been victims of an unplanned lockdown. With this screening of 'The Other Song', we mark our protest by celebrating this classic film by Saba Dewan, where she poses a searing critique of the nation-state and national identity formation in post-independence India, within the changing contours and erasures of what is known as "Hindustani classical music", beginning with an apparently simple personal quest for a long song. In solidarity with the filmmakers, and in protest of the continued harassment, intimidation, incarceration of activists, artists and intellectuals by the regime.
