Incredible wildlife sighting on the PR1 (Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo) hike in Madeira, where we came across a family of Barbary partridges hanging out high above the clouds. The Barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) is native to North Africa but was introduced to Madeira centuries ago. It has adapted remarkably well to the island’s steep volcanic terrain. These ground-dwelling birds prefer rocky, open landscapes, which makes the dramatic ridgelines of Madeira a perfect habitat. What makes this encounter even more special? Partridge chicks are precocial, meaning they hatch fully covered in down and are able to walk and feed themselves within hours. The small birds you see here were likely only a few weeks old and already confidently navigating cliffs at over 1,800 meters above sea level. At high altitudes like this, oxygen levels are lower and temperatures fluctuate quickly. These birds thrive thanks to efficient respiratory systems and strong legs built for rugged terrain. A quiet, beautiful reminder that even above the clouds, life finds a way.
