Starting this summer you might see Munch Bunch goats that look a little… free range. At some locations there will be no physical fence containing them. And no, we didn’t hire an expert dog trainer to teach the goats how to ‘stay’. What is this pure magic? A revolutionary technology called virtual fencing. Yes, it is similar to an invisible fence for dogs, except there are no wires. We can draw the fence, and move the fence, from our phones. We are joining 2,600+ farms across the world that have been using this technology successfully for years. Thanks to a North Central SARE grant, we are able to test the containment effectiveness in our area. So far, it is amazing! As we explore this technology and you see the goats, please remember they have not grown up in a petting zoo. If you walk towards them and they walk away, they are asking for their space. These goats do get tired of the paparazzi from time to time. And like all working professionals, they have deadlines too. We have been working towards this goal for years and we hope others will be as excited about this technology as we are. It means we can put goats in difficult terrain that is easy for them but hard for humans to fence.
