In German, it is possible to add a prefix to simple verbs to form a verb with a new meaning. Many of these new verbs are separable. For a simple declarative sentence in the present tense, this means that the original simple verb is conjugated and is in the second position in the sentence. The prefix is placed at the end of the sentence. You can often tell whether a verb is separable by the prefix it has. Verbs with prefixes such as ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, weg-, zu- are always separable. In contrast, verbs with prefixes such as be-, ent-, er-, ver-, zer- are not separable. Verbs with prefixes such as durch-, über-, um-, unter- can be separable or inseparable. You can also recognize separable verbs by their pronunciation. With separable verbs, the prefix is always stressed. In this German lesson, you will also learn how to pronounce articles, nouns, adjectives and pronouns correctly. The verb "declinate" comes from the Latin word "declinare" and means "to bend". When declining, nominal words, i.e. nouns, articles, pronouns and adjectives, are adapted to the case, number and grammatical gender. There are four different cases in German: Nominative, genitive, dative and accusative. The number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine, feminine or neuter) are also relevant for the adaptation. In declension, words can be adapted to the four cases. The grammatical case is also referred to as the case. The case is a grammatical category that indicates the dependency and function of a part of a sentence. The nominative case is the first case and is also considered the basic form of a word. The genitive case, on the other hand, indicates affiliation. The dative case follows certain verbs and prepositions. Verbs that require the dative case are, for example: say, answer, recommend, show, explain, give, bring, donate, lend, send or help. If there are several objects without a preposition, the dative is the "indirect object". Prepositions that require the dative case are, for example: von, bei, aus, mit, nach, zu or seit. With alternating prepositions, the dative case follows the question "Where?". The accusative is also marked by certain verbs and prepositions. Verbs that require the accusative are, for example: pick up, visit, need, pay, find, hear, know, search or drink. The accusative is the direct object. Prepositions that require the accusative are, for example: ohne, für, durch, gegen or um. Our German lessons offer an entertaining and effective way to learn German.
