Finnish Army anti-aircraft training at ADEX Mallet Strike 1/24 exercises. Coastal positions with MANPAD and NSVT AA weaponry. Weapons shown: ITO05 / ITO05M (Saab RBS 70) MANPADS / short range air defence missile. NSVT - Soviet 12,7x108 mm caliber heavy machine gun. Surface-to-Air Missile 05 (ITO05 and 05M) The Surface-to-air missile 05 (Advanced Short Range Air Defence System - RBS) is used to cause casualties to the enemy in the area of Army formations and other targets or forces. Installed on a Unimog 5000 vehicle platform, ITO 05 is a mobile system, capable of independent operation 24 hours a day. The missiles can be fired either from the vehicle chassis, or with a man-portable launcher. A maximum of five missiles can be ready to fire at one time. A target acquisition radar, daylight and thermal cameras and a laser range finder are used for targeting and firing control. The missile will home on its target according to the firing platform’s guidance by following a laser beam directed at the target. The warhead, which has a shaped charge and is pre-fragmented, is activated by a laser proximity fuze and impact fuze. The NSV is called 12,7 Itkk 96 or 12,7 ilmatorjuntakonekivääri 96 ('12.7 anti-aircraft machine gun 96') in Finland. It is often used as a vehicle-mounted machine gun, and can be seen on the Pasi armoured personnel carrier, the Nasu transport vehicle and the Leopard 2R tank. Due to its high rate of fire, the NSV is intended to be used as a close-range anti-aircraft weapon against helicopters, UAVs and aircraft. In dismounted ground combat it is placed on a special mount. The Finnish Navy also uses the NSV in the anti-aircraft role, where it complements other unguided anti-aircraft weapons like the 23 ITK 95, Bofors 40 Mk 3 or Bofors 57 Mk 2 and Mk 3. (C) Jukka O. Air Defence Exercise in Lohtaja, May 14–23 The Finnish Defence Forces conducted an Air Defence Exercise on the Lohtaja firing range and military training area in May. The air defense exercise ADEX MALLET STRIKE 1/24 includes both air defence missions and live fire exercises. For the first time since Finland joined NATO in April 2023, the armed forces of Finland and Germany trained together practicing surface-based air defence during the Finnish-led exercise Mallet Strike. A key exercise objective has been to hone interoperability and integration of the German PATRIOT unit with Finnish NASAMS (National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) for this purpose, the authority over the German unit was transferred to the Finnish Army increasing the effectiveness of training together and practicing communications structures and chain of command. “We wanted to show our national solution of defending our country, our air defence systems, conscripts, the way we train and fight, and what we can bring to NATO,” describes the Colonel Mano-Mikael Nokelainen Finnish Inspector of the Ground Based Air Defence Forces. “I hope and believe our German friends learned something from us – we definitely learned from them,” he added. This type of binational live exercise supports achieving common and individual exercise objectives including different elements of air operations such as reconnaissance or electronic warfare and defence against airborne threats e.g. by surface-based or maritime systems. “I am so proud that together with our Finnish Allies, we made a decisive contribution by participating in this exercise to advance interoperability and deepen integration between our PATRIOT and Finnish ground-based air defence systems,” said Colonel Alexander Zoklits Commodore of the German Surface-to-Air Missile Wing 1. “In doing so, we are making an important contribution to strengthening NATO's integrated air defence, providing credible deterrence and increasing the Alliance's defence capability,” he added. Interoperability enables Allied forces to act together coherently, effectively and efficiently to achieve tactical, operational and strategic objectives. It is essential for all operations in which NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence is involved and requires a high degree of coordination Suomeksi ADEX-harjoitus on kaksivaiheinen. #siivet #siivetwings #puolustusvoimat -- Siivet-Wings magazine: http://siivet.fi/ For more great aviation videos please see: / siivet1986
