A lively virtual discussion with USC School of Cinematic Arts alumni filmmakers about their Virtual Sundance Film Festival 2022 experiences, moderated by SCA Professor Doug Blush, featuring: ABI DAMARIS CORBIN '16 (Screenwriter, Director, Executive Producer - 892) Abi Damaris Corbin is a Boston-bred writer/director based in Los Angeles. Her feature debut 892 co-written with Kwame Kwei-Armah and starring John Boyega is currently in post-production. Abi’s BAFTA shortlisted live-action short, THE SUITCASE had its world premiere at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and screened worldwide as an official selection at over 50 festivals and on ShortsTV, ARTE, and HBO. It won multiple prizes and was nominated for awards at internationally renowned festivals. The film was sponsored by several organizations including George Lucas' think tank - the Entertainment Technology Center, Disney, Universal Studios, and Google. The pioneering technology developed on the project has been adopted as standard by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, where Abi contributes as a speaker. Corbin entered college at age fourteen, graduating with a Master of Arts in Performance Studies. Her desire to grow as a creator then led her to USC’s graduate film production program where she earned a Master of Fine Arts. She is a Sony Pictures Directors Program alumnus. SAM DAVIS '16 (Producer, Director of Photography - Long Line of Ladies) Sam is a multifaceted filmmaker with a foundation in cinematography, best known for producing, shooting, and editing the Oscar-winning short film Period. End of Sentence.. Sam's work has screened in competition at world-class festivals including Sundance, SXSW and Tribeca. He co-directed the short film Are You Still There? which premiered at SXSW in 2021. Through he and Rayka Zehtabchi's banner Junk Drawer, Sam produced, shot and cut the documentary short Long Line of Ladies which made its world premiere at Sundance '22. ROSS DINERSTEIN '05 (Producer - TikTok, Boom.) Ross Dinerstein is film and tv producer based in Los Angeles. He is currently the CEO and founder of CAMPFIRE. Campfire is a premium production company known for its broad bench of content across scripted and unscripted, for both feature film and TV/streaming platforms. Part of Wheelhouse Entertainment, Campfire’s projects include Hulu's upcoming WeWork feature documentary (produced alongside Forbes Entertainment and Olive Hill Media); HBO Max's Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults; FX’s first ever docuseries The Most Dangerous Animal of All; Netflix’s true-crime documentary series John Grisham’s The Innocent Man (which contributed to a federal judge overturning in 2019 the wrongful conviction of subject Karl Fontenot after 36 years behind bars); and Netflix’s Emmy-nominated, scripted series Special (currently in production on Season 2). Campfire has also partnered with Blumhouse TV on upcoming scripted and unscripted projects based around the Detroit Youth Choir ("AGT" runners-up). Over the last 15 years, Dinerstein has produced or executive produced 40+ series and films, including debuts at Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca and TIFF. His credits also include feature documentaries Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Silicon Cowboys. His most recent project, A Glitch in the Matrix, will be having its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. CHENGLIN XIE '19 (Director, Screenwriter, Producer, Animator - Meal on the Plate) Chenglin Xie (b. China 1994) is an award-winning filmmaker and animation artist. He received his BFA degree from China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2016, and MFA degree from School of Cinematic Arts of University of Southern California in 2019. Chenglin's best-known film, Life Smartphone, won the Gold Medal in the 44th Student Academy Awards®, was shortlisted for Best Animated Shorts in 90th Academy Awards®, nominated for 43rd Annie Award, selected by the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and many others. In 2015, Chenglin was honored to be listed as one of the top 5 directors in the “Top 30 Short Film Directors In China Of The Year”. In 2018, he was honored as one of the “Top 10 Outstanding Chinese America Youth”. In 2022, Chenglin's newest animated short film, Meal On The Plate, was officially selected by the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Currently, Chenglin works as a director based in LA, and a story artist at Netflix. RAYKA ZEHTABCHI '16 (Director, Producer - Long Line of Ladies) Rayka Zehtabchi is a director and producer working in both documentary and fiction. In 2019, Rayka became the first Iranian woman to win an Oscar for her film "Period. End of Sentence.," which can be seen on Netflix worldwide. She brings a naturalistic approach to her storytelling in all her projects, striving for honesty and intimacy on screen.
