The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) is widely considered the most beautiful hiking trail in the Algarve, Portugal. This iconic cliff-top walk offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, golden limestone formations, and some of the country's most famous beaches. Key Trail Information Distance: Approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) one way. A full round trip is roughly 12 km (7.5 miles). Duration: Expect to spend 2.5 to 3 hours for a one-way trek, or 5 to 6 hours for the out-and-back route. Difficulty: Moderate. While the path is well-marked with red and yellow stripes, it features uneven rocky terrain, some steep steps, and constant elevation changes. Route Type: Linear (one-way). Many hikers choose to walk one way and take a taxi or Uber back to their starting point (approx. €8–€12). Praia da Marinha: Often cited as one of the world's most beautiful beaches, famous for its "M" shaped rock formation. Benagil Cave: You will pass directly over the top of this world-famous sea cave. While you can look down through the "eye" (fenced off for safety), you must take a boat or kayak tour to enter it. Praia do Carvalho: Known for its unique access through a man-made tunnel in the rock. Alfanzina Lighthouse: A historic landmark marking a scenic midway point. Praia de Vale Centeanes: The western terminus of the trail, near the town of Carvoeiro. Best Time to Visit Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–November): The optimal time to hike due to mild temperatures and blooming wildflowers. Summer (June–August): Can be extremely hot with very little shade. If visiting now, start before 8:00 AM to beat the heat and the crowds. Winter: Generally pleasant, but check the forecast on TripAdvisor for rain or high winds. What to Bring: Sturdy footwear (NO! flip-flops), plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and your swimsuit for a dip at one of the beaches along the way. Facilities: Limited restrooms and cafes are available at the main beaches (Marinha, Benagil, and Centeanes) Why Choose a Boat Tour? Access the Benagil Cave: While you can see the "eye" of the famous Benagil Cave from the trail, the only way to actually enter it is by water. Due to 2026 regulations, swimming into the cave is strictly prohibited; you must use a boat, kayak, or SUP. See "Hidden" Landmarks: Many caves and wild beaches along the trail, such as Captain’s Cave and the Albandeira Arch, are only accessible from the sea. Convenience: Boat tours typically cover the entire 6km stretch of the trail in about 1.5 to 2 hours, making it a time-efficient alternative to the 6-hour round-trip hik Practical Tips Booking: For the best experience, book at least 24–48 hours in advance, especially during summer (June–August). Best Time: Morning tours (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM) generally offer the calmest sea conditions and the best lighting inside the Benagil Cave. Weather Warnings: Tours are strictly dependent on sea conditions. If the Atlantic is too rough, boats will not enter the caves for safety reasons. What to Wear: Expect to get wet from sea spray! Wear a swimsuit, bring a waterproof bag for your phone/camera, and use plenty of sunscreen The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region, famous for its Mediterranean climate, world-class golf courses, and some of the most picturesque beaches in Europe.
