CHAPTER FOUR: On most days, Olive walks her dog Casper through the vast fields and small forests that stretch behind her house and out of town. On one particular instance, Olive meets Henry “Harry” Jacob-Smith, a Captain on leave due to an injury that causes him to walk with a cane. Harry recognises Olive from their school days and they reconnect, reminiscing about life before the war and in the present. Harry is prescribed by his doctor (who also happens to be his father) to walk for at least an hour everyday to strengthen his leg before he’s due another medical examination from the army board. He and Olive agree to go on these walks through the landscape together to keep each other company. LYRICS: You don’t remember the last time that we spoke but I do They always warned you about growing too fast but they made you Guarding your body from the sunlight for months, you look paler Looks like you bled out the parts of you that gave you colour Your little brother was so stubborn at school I guess he thought it made him look cool But when they pulled him from that flooded hole He looked as if he wished he hadn’t been such a fool Waited for an excuse just to answer the call He was the archetypal hero after all They say he went out with great gallantry But somewhere they’re still scraping bits of him off the trees I’m not like the boys on the posters I don’t ever think I’d die for this place But I love the way the spring breeze makes the leaves on the trees shake And if it’s all the same I love the streams and greens and greys You look back and you say with a sigh “I hate this rotten country but it’s mine” Born to early to experience change Born to late to believe in God Do you ever think deep down human beings are incapable of love ‘Cause They’ll create a circus To give them some purpose Never concerned with being a good person False promises enough to make you reject your shell They expect you to act normal when you’ve just been through hell And I said I can relate This beautiful blindness is starting to become something that I hate And if there’s nothing left to say anymore So let’s just walk until we can’t anymore I’m not like the boys on the posters I don’t ever think I’d die for this place But I love the way the spring breeze makes the leaves on the trees shake Not sure how to comply When they say they’re happy and they lie But I still keep watching the birds in the sky I hate this rotten country but it’s mine Time is dragging, statements become whispers We stand connecting where they can’t listen in “Do you ever worry that you could be next?” You said “first I have to worry about this wound on my leg” It’s taken me a little time to realise that I like his face I met him limping by the path down the stream I forgot his eyes were blue not grey I’m not like the boys on the posters I don’t ever think I’d die for this place But I love the way the spring breeze makes the leaves on the trees shake And in another life Am I yours and are you mine? We don’t hurt and everything’s fine? I hate this rotten country I hate this rotten country but it’s mine It’s mine LISTEN TO LIEUTENANT BECKWITH’S WIDOW: https://open.spotify.com/album/3ot87PfzHE4...
