Have you ever driven on a side your not familiar with? Twitch: / andreas1twitch tldr: Some countries drive on the left because of history and tradition, mainly influenced by Britain. Back in the day, people rode horses on the left to keep their dominant hand free for defense, but as wagons got bigger, many places switched to driving on the right for better visibility. Napoleon and later Hitler enforced right-side travel in their territories, while Britain stubbornly stuck to the left, partly as a rejection of French influence. Early cars had no set driving position, but when Ford’s Model T put the steering wheel on the left, many countries adopted right-side driving. Britain and Japan, however, kept their left-side rules—Britain because they already had a strong car industry and Japan because they had British-built railways. Some countries, like Sweden, switched in the 20th century, but for most left-driving nations today, it would be too costly and unnecessary to change.
