Settler was beaten and stabbed in a dispute over payment. One suspect surrendered at the border, and six others were arrested in different locations. Michael Andrew Kane was sentenced to 14 years in prison for Settler's voluntary manslaughter by hatchet. The other six co-defendants were also sentenced. The Settler family delivered "moving statements" at the sentencing.
