Louis Armstrong is nearly certain to make any top-five list of the most influential jazz musicians, as both trumpet player and vocalist. Modern ears might miss how revolutionary he was in the 1920s, with significant prowess on the horn matched by a rhythmic and harmonic sense that was far ahead of most musicians of that era. His influence went beyond that of a jazz musician, with a mile-wide smile reflecting a positive spirit that inspired and uplifted people throughout the world. This is the first of a number of episodes dedicated to the man many would consider the father of jazz, and some of the musicians in his orbit who shaped the future of jazz in the early years. ABOUT THIS SERIES The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s.
