New York, 1951. Jazz pianist Calvin Reeves walks into a record shop on 52nd Street and meets Ruth Caldwell — a woman who used to play piano and decided she was better at listening. He invites her to an evening set at the Blue Note. She comes and sits by the wall, where the sound is best. At the break he sits down. She says: the left hand is doing something the right hand isn't ready for yet. He asks how she knows. She says: because the left hand works ahead. Six weeks of rehearsals, sessions, late walks through New York. Calvin is working on a harmonic problem three approaches haven't solved. At a rehearsal, with Ruth in the chair by the wall, the right hand finally follows the left. He finds the fourth approach. November 14th — a recording session for Blue Note Records. The fourth number, one take, left and right hand together. After the session they walk through the park. He stops at a bench and says: I want to name what this is. She says: yes. He asks: since when. She says: since the record shop. He says: I named it first. She says: I heard it first.
