New York, 1951. Jazz pianist Calvin Reeves walks into a record shop on 52nd Street and meets Ruth Caldwell — a woman who used to play piano and decided she was better at listening. He invites her to an evening set at the Blue Note. She comes and sits by the wall, where the sound is best. At the break he sits down. She says: the left hand is doing something the right hand isn't ready for yet. He asks how she knows. She says: because the left hand works ahead. Six weeks of rehearsals, sessions, late walks through New York. Calvin is working on a harmonic problem three approaches haven't solved.
