French probe ignores role of police in death of Syrian migrant (sneak peek)

It seems French authorities have little regard for the lives of migrants at the Franco-British border. Jumaa al-Hasan, a young Syrian man, drowned on the night between 2-3 March last year in the north of France, during an attempted police interception. A new investigation from The New Arab can reveal that, despite the proximity of officers on shore and repeated warnings from those travelling with al-Hasan, the police did nothing to save the 27-year-old. And in the aftermath of his death, the fire brigade only carried out a minimal search. A year later, the courts are looking the other way. Only smugglers are being investigated, while the responsibility of the French police are being overlooked, as well as the shortcomings of the emergency services.
