Just got my third REJECTION for 2021! This was for an animated TV show where the production company always askes for playlists before "calling us back" to officially audition. Often these playlists are very, very, very specific. In this case (paraphrased): "We're looking for orchestral action music featuring West African percussion, non-specific tribal chanting, kalimba, and electric guitar." To which I always respond - "Of course, got tons of that!" Obviously I don't have ANY of that - and I suspect the majority of composers auditioning also don't - so I hunker down and compose it. This time I tried something new - scoring to an existing movie that would work with similar instrumentation - so that 1.) the writing process would be easier with visuals to give me pacing, hit points, and dramatic arc, and 2.) I'd have something to post afterwards. Didn't get called back, but mostly proud of how it turned out. Only thing I'm not happy with are those "tribal chants," and hope the person that gets this came up with a more authentic solution. If I were to score it "for real," I'd want to team up with musicians with some kind of genuine indigenous origins, but due to budget (none) and time I had to settle for field recordings from "Splice." Maybe it's what lost it for me? Let me know what you think.
