Making a timber water carrier | Part one

Djamu: Wirri Yinnarngu is an artist-led project that explores the creation of Aboriginal–Australian timber water carriers. Part one of Wirri Yinnarngu focuses on the harvesting and preparation of timber burls on Yuwaalaraay Country. Developed as part of the Art Gallery’s programming to support Indigenous young people in the NSW Youth Justice System; the project is focused on sharing cultural knowledge and practice, and is centered on notions of caring for Country and caring for self. The project is a collaboration with Lucy Simpson and Tom Barker, and Yuwaalaaray language holder Priscilla Strasek.
