In this episode we revisit the geocentric astronomical model that is at the heart of the Surya Siddhanta to understand how the Surya Siddhanta models sunrise and sunset. The Surya Siddhantha posits that the Earth is at the center of Brahmanda and furthermore that the Earth is unmoving, i.e. the Earth is not spinning on its axis! This means the Surya Siddhanta posits that the Earth and all other heavenly bodies, including the rashi mandala, rotate around the Earth at a very rapid speed, approximately once every twenty four hours. This rotation is from east to west above the horizon and hence accounts for the rising and setting of the heavenly bodies (i.e. the diurnal movement that we observe daily). At the same time, the rate of such rotation is not equal for all heavenly bodies. The rashi mandala (consisting of all the stars) rotates the fastest and Moon rotates the slowest, with all other heavenly bodies being in between the two. As a result there is a second, apparent movement of all heavenly bodies from west to east (above the horizon) against the backdrop of the rashi mandala (i.e. the sidereal movement of the heavenly bodies). It is this apparent movement that has been discussed in all the Ahargana episodes so far. 0:00 Opening narration 6:49 GeoGebra animation 14:13 Diurnal movement (sunrise and sunset) 13:30 Sidereal movement 26:18 Closing narration
