Julie is Philippe Boesmans' fourth opera. In this return to the chamber opera model, the composer has concentrated on the alchemy of the human relationships that lead the heroine of Strindberg's drama to take her own life. Three voices, a chamber orchestra, a single setting and a single night: thus do we become witnesses to the fate of this moving young woman. Available on DVD ! Julie is an intimate work, a one-act chamber opera based on Swedish dramatist August Strindberg's Mademoiselle Julie, written in 1888. Boesmans' score is highly personal. The writing – at once dense and precise, rich and colourful, delicate and graphic – is further evidence that opera is his native element. The stage lineup is more than impressive, with British singer Garry Magee a powerful, feet-on-the-ground Jean. Malena Ernman is the ideal Julie, beginning in an initial position of dominance then drawing us with her in her downward spiral. The trio is marvellously rounded off by the limpidly fresh voice of young Swedish singer Kerstin Avemo. The La Monnaie Chamber Orchestra is dauntingly precise, giving superb expression to the work's accessibility and attention to detail. And once again Japanese Kazushi Ono offers proof of his prowess as a great lyric conductor.
