Paul Chowles, a National Crime Agency (NCA) officer, was jailed for five years and six months for stealing 50 Bitcoin, now worth over £4.4 million, from a criminal during a 2013 investigation into dark web illegal goods sales. Chowles, 42, from Bristol, admitted to theft, transferring, and concealing criminal property at Liverpool Crown Court on May 27, 2025. The Bitcoin, originally valued at £60,000, was seized from Thomas White, a Liverpool criminal jailed in 2019. Chowles, who led data and cryptocurrency analysis, transferred the Bitcoin in May 2017, attempting to obscure the trail, and converted portions into £23,309 through 279 transactions and £6,232 in withdrawals, benefiting by an estimated £613,147.29. Merseyside Police, investigating after White noticed the theft, arrested Chowles in May 2022, uncovering incriminating evidence on his iPhone and notebooks. The NCA sacked Chowles for gross misconduct and cooperated fully with the police. Detective Chief Inspector John Black emphasized that no one is above the law and highlighted Merseyside Police’s expertise in tracking illicit funds.
