Worried about your chest shape? Pectus excavatum, where the breast bone is pushed abnormally inward, or ‘sunken chest’ affects approximately one in 300 people in the UK. Pectus carinatum, sometimes referred to as ‘pigeon chest’ is where the breastbone is pushed outward affects around one in 1,000 people. At the London Orthotic Consultancy, we offer a combination of corrective bracing to treat pectus deformity (pectus carinatum and pectus excavatum) with specialist physiotherapy, breathing and exercise programmes to achieve pectus correction. Patients often ask our specialist pectus clinicians common questions about treatment and which lifestyle changes they can make in order for bracing to be its most successful. For some patients, it’s learning what life will be like while wearing a chest brace and if it will infringe upon their day-to-day lifestyle. Hopefully this video series which discusses frequently asked questions about pectus deformity treatment, with London Orthotic Consultancy director and pectus specialist, Sam Walmsley will provide a source of information and comfort for people considering bracing treatment as an alternative to surgery. And for more general information on how chest bracing works: https://www.londonorthotics.co.uk/pec... In this video: Q: Do Pectus patients grow out of their brace? Sam: So I have never had to make anyone a new brace because they have grown out to it. We have always managed to use one brace to see someone all the way through treatment. The braces are designed for us to be able to grow them quite easily through treatment. We have to move pads around, we have to change pads, we have to change the metal steels and the alignment of them, but generally we are very conscious that it is a big investment upfront and we want to manage the growth over a long period of time. It is really important that you follow our procedures and you get checked and reviewed.
