In 1799, an enslaved carpenter named Denmark Vesey won $1,500 in a street lottery. He used the money to buy his freedom, but he couldn't buy freedom for his wife and children. So, he spent the next 20 years planning something else: the most extensive slave rebellion in United States history. This video examines the life of Denmark Vesey and the terrifying scope of his 1822 plot to seize the city of Charleston, South Carolina. We explore how he recruited thousands of conspirators in total secrecy, the role of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and the betrayal that ultimately led to the execution of 35 men. Was it a real plot or mass hysteria? Watch the full story and decide for yourself.
