📅 Recorded on: 3 November 2025 This webinar is the third in a four-part series on human rights-based approaches (HRBA) to EU development cooperation, hosted by the EU-VALUES Network. Building on earlier sessions that explored global HRBA frameworks and Latin American perspectives, this discussion turns to Africa — examining how diverse regional contexts shape both the understanding and the practical implementation of HRBA in development cooperation. The conversation delves into governance systems, accountability mechanisms, migration policies, and the evolving roles of African and European actors in advancing human rights in development processes. We were delighted to welcome three distinguished speakers: Prof. Magnus Killander (University of Pretoria) — “Migration Prevention as the Cornerstone of the EU’s Development Approach to Africa” Prof. Jan Erk (Mohammed VI Polytechnic University) — “Traditional Systems of Law and Governance across Africa: Resilience and Resurgence” Dr. Kari Otteburn (KU Leuven) — “Bridging Accountability Gaps: The Role of States and Corporations in EU–Africa HRBA Development Cooperation” The session was moderated by Dr. Philip De Man (KU Leuven) and organised within the framework of the EU-VALUES Jean Monnet Network (EU Research and Education Network on Foreign Policy Issues: Values and Democracy).
