Today marks a very special moment for Afri and for our former Coordinator Joe Murray. One year after retiring, Joe is taking on a remarkable challenge to honour Afri’s legacy and support its future. Over the next week, Joe will cycle the Famine Walk route five times, adding an extra stretch to bring the total to 100 kilometres. For someone living with the effects of Transverse Myelitis, this will be no small feat – but it is a challenge Joe is determined to complete. Joe is cycling in memory of all those who died on the Doolough route in 1849 and during An Gorta Mór, in solidarity with all those who face needless hunger and starvation today, especially the people of Gaza, and in honour of cherished friends of Afri, including Brendan Forde, Tom Hyland, Sunny Jacobs, and our late patron Archbishop Desmond Tutu. As Afri celebrates its 50th anniversary, Joe’s challenge is both an incredible tribute to all who have journeyed with Afri and a gift to its continuity. His enduring belief in Afri’s work for peace, justice and human rights is an inspiration to us all. You can support Joe’s cycle and Afri’s work at the link below: https://platform.payzone.ie/customer/... For five decades Afri has been involved in opposing war, promoting food sovereignty and tackling climate change - working especially with Secondary and Third level students as well as with the general public. We organise the annual Famine Walk in Mayo, a Hedge School in TU Blanchardstown and Féile Bríde in Kildare. Thank you for continuing to support our work. https://www.afri.ie
