President at the Law Council of Australia Pauline Wright says Australia is the only country in the western democratic world that does not have a human rights charter, saying citizens' rights aren't currently protected. "Our rights aren't really protected in Australia. A lot of Australians think we have a Bill of Rights and we don't. We don't have anything like the United States does - we have nothing like the United Kingdom does or Canada," she said. "We're the only country in the western democratic world that doesn't have a human rights charter at the federal level. "We want to redress that so we can live in a society that can be assured is going to respect our human dignity and treat us with equality. "The COVID-19 situation and the government's responses to it have underlined to a lot of Australians that we don't have the rights we thought we had." Ms Wright said most Australians, as a whole, have felt comfortable with the level of restrictions imposed by federal and state governments.
