Christ Episcopal Church: The Church for the Proposed Capital of New York State I had been doing some videoing out in the Town of Duanesburg and realized some historical markers were in the area. I decided to find them for a YouTube Short: History Signs in Duanesburg, NY (https://shorturl.at/h3USE). As I was approaching the location I saw this church in the middle of no-where; large and well-kept but with nothing really around. As I was filming the YouTube Short I met Steve Schrade, Jr. Warden of the Church Vestry. He was nice enough to give me a tour and history of the church. To view the entire church inside and outside watch the YouTube Short too. As I was talking with Steve I was shocked to find that at one time a prominent founder of the country felt that this location would be the capital of New York State. The parish was incorporated as Christ's Church & consecrated in 1793 by Bishop Samuel Provoost. He was one of the three original American bishops of the Episcopal Church; first Bishop of New York and Rector of Trinity Wall Street in New York City. James Duane, a federal judge, was one of the wardens at Trinity Church, and John Jay, a Supreme Court Judge, was the other warden at the time. The church building, which James Duane paid to have built, is on the National Historical Register. [1] James Duane represented the Diocese of New York at General Convention; the first Mayor of New York City after the American Revolution. He was also associated with the drawing up of the Articles of Confederation, and with the proposal for the formation of the Continental Army. During this period of American history New York City was the capital of New York State and the capital of the United States of America. Duane owned the land now called Gramercy Park. [2] “A local historian has noted that James Duane, who founded the town of Duanesburg, proposed to make Duanesburg the Capital of New York State, prior to the selection of Albany (which officially became the capital in 1797). Not only was Christ's Church to have been at the center of the town of Duanesburg, but it would also have been at the center of the capital city of New York State, literally.” [3] So, why isn’t the church in the middle of Duanesburg let alone NYS? It’s called the railroad. It went through about a mile south with a depot. Of course, as time went out most of the commerce eventually moved to Schenectady and even Duanesburg is really just a small hamlet, not the capital of New York. James Duane’s wife Mary Livingston was the niece of Robert Livingston who was on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence; however, her grandfather (Philip) actually signed it on behalf of New York. The Livingston family had been involved with the founding of the Whig Club in New York. James Duane's daughter, Mary, married General William North, who lived in Duanesburg and who was a warden of the parish. Mr. North was an aide to Baron Steuben during the Revolutionary War. [4] This is one of those unexpected joys of history when you’re allowed to jump into. I am very appreciative of Steve Schrade and the time he took to show me around and give a history of the church and James Duane and his family. I hope you enjoyed watching the video, please subscribe if you haven’t already and ring the bell to see when the next video comes out. As always, please leave a comment and hit the like button.
