"Aid and the UN are kind of two separate topics but to my mind they are a continuum of international systems that have long been broken and that we now have an opportunity to try to fix" Heba Aly is the Coordinator of the UN Charter Reform Coalition, which mobilizes UN Member States to update the UN Charter and a Senior Advisor at the Coalition for the UN We Need, which engages civil society in UN reform processes. She is also the facilitator of a dialogue series convened by the think tank ODI Global, bringing together major aid donors to reimagine development cooperation in a “post-aid world”. An Egyptian-Canadian journalist, entrepreneur and thought leader, Heba is the former CEO of the world’s leading source of independent journalism about humanitarian crises, The New Humanitarian. Heba was also host of the Rethinking Humanitarianism podcast, considered a “must-listen” in the aid sector. Earlier in her career, Heba spent one decade reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. Heba talked about why current models of international development and multilateralism need to evolve, drawing on the work of the new UN Charter Reform Coalition and a series of dialogues she has facilitated with donor governments amid recent aid budget cuts. She will explain why and how we should use this moment of disruption to advance reforms that have long been needed. Summary Video by Warebo Production.
