What would aliens think if they saw all the space junk humans have created? 🌌Behind the humor, however, lies a very real challenge. With thousands of inactive satellites and debris fragments already orbiting Earth, even a single collision could disrupt communications, GPS, weather monitoring, and other systems societies depend on. Dr. Dmitry Sizov addressed both serious and unexpected questions with clarity, explaining how his ongoing research, including the TARAZ project — Tethered Aerobrake Research for Active Deorbit and Zero-Debris Demonstration — aims to develop practical solutions to safely remove space debris from orbit. Science Café is a conversation-driven format where NU researchers talk about their work for audiences outside academia - no PhD required, just curiosity. We plan to meet journalists once a month to discuss current research in an accessible way, helping science move beyond labs and into public discussion. Curious to learn more? Watch the full recording and see how topics like satellite orbits and space debris can be explained clearly and responsibly. Science Café is organized by the NU Press Office and curated by Akmaral Syzdykova as part of NU’s science communication efforts. #ScienceCafe #nazarbayevuniversity
