Silence from that point on wards :-( Shame, my playing was just awesome...honest :-) Thanks Jack for the heads-up !!! ##### In this video I assess and set up Colin's Fender Modern Player Telecaster, sent to me by courier because Colin wasn't happy with the 'out of the box' set up and couldn't get it the way he wanted it. Like many people who send me their guitars, he described it as 'unplayable'. When you think about it, this isn't a very good achievement for a company such as Fender - no matter how many corners they have to cut to retain their margins and even if they were to recommend a full set up when you buy from them (I'm sure that doesn't happen at the point of retail!). This guitar is a lovely looking and versatile creature. Transparent sunburst finish over a nice grain wood, full Tele thickness with a 'belly' cutaway a bit like a Strat. It has the familiar Tele pickups (neck 'lipstick' and single coil in a middle position) but with the addition of a splittable humbucker at the bridge position. This, along with the 5 way selector switch gives a nice range of tonal options. On assessing the guitar I felt it was a nice unit and not quite as badly set up as I'd expected. The action at the last fret was around 3mm on the bass side and various actions at the 1st fret (ranging from 0.4 - 0.7mm at the hightest). There was also virtually no relief in the neck. A careful check revealed the usual range of uneven frets (as sampled in the fully-strung playing set up). I set about setting the nut slots to my idea for the target action of 1.5mm at the 21st fret - which translates to around 0.3-0.4mm (trust me, it's not microscopically accurate this game!). Then I set the playing action at the bridge to give a range from 1.6mm at the low E to around 1.3mm at the high E. I adjusted the truss rod to put about 0.3mm of relief into the neck. Then, with the neck and upper body (including pickups) masked off, I did a precision fret-levelling. I stopped levelling exactly at the point at which it gave a satisfactory playing action (all notes playing cleanly without buzz on each string). Once levelled, I then re-crowned or re-profiled the frets before polishing them up to a playing finish. Then I adjusted the intonation (just two strings slightly out) and the guitar was done. Light as a feather to play. Worth restating that the playing action / feel is the product of four key things: the action over the 1st fret, the action at the last fret, the neck relief and the condition (and height) of the strings. A very small adjustment in all of these add up to a considerable change in the way a guitar feels for its owner when they get it back. It's worth remembering that this change might actually be too BIG for some people - and I'm often at pains to point this out to make sure customers know what to expect. A tiny adjustment at just the nut end - for example lowering the 1st fret action from 0.8mm to 0.3mm - can transform the feel of the guitar completely. The one thing that I found disappointing on this guitar was the action of the tuners. They look the same as those on the Squier Classic Vibe necks (in fact I'd bet these necks ARE the same as the CV necks apart from the decals and string trees) but on this guitar, they were stiff and had little gaps of 'free turning' without doing anything. Not positive, in other words and definitely not something I'd expect from a Fender guitar - even a Chinese-made one like this.
