I'm a senior physician here at the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at Dana-Farber. Today's question is "What are the risk factors for lung cancer?" We've known for a long time now that cigarette smoking is the most important risk for developing lung cancer. In fact, smokers have a 20 fold increase in the risk of lung cancer compared to nonsmokers. So if you're watching this with a cigarette in your hand, please put it out. Go seek out your doctor and talk about strategies for quitting. We know it isn't easy, but it's oh so important. In terms of other possible risk factors for lung cancer, we know that the world around us presents us with a lot of potential risks. These include things like secondhand smoke, asbestos, radioactive substances, including radon, beryllium, diesel exhaust. Where we live and what we do for a living may increase our exposure to any or all of these. In addition, people wonder whether there might be inheritable risks for lung cancer. Are there genes that might increase your risk of lung cancer? This is an evolving field. Though we know that there are selected families who do have inheritable mutations in their EGFR gene, these are pretty few and far between. In summary, the most important piece is to please stop smoking.
