Hypermobility & Sleep/Breathing Issues Many patients who come to me for sleep and breathing problems actually have something called hypermobility. Hypermobility means your joints move beyond the normal range because the connective tissue is more elastic. And that same connective tissue also supports your airway — so if it’s looser, you’re at higher risk for upper airway resistance syndrome and sleep apnea. Common complaints I hear: • “I’ve always been really flexible or double-jointed.” • Chronic joint pain or joints that feel unstable. • Headaches, neck pain, or dizziness. • Poor sleep quality, snoring, or waking unrefreshed. • Fatigue out of proportion to activity. • Digestive issues (IBS, reflux, bloating). • Dental crowding or TMJ pain. Signs I look for on exam: • Joints that bend way past normal • Stretchy or unusually elastic skin • Frequent sprains/dislocations • Forward head posture or slouched shoulders • High, narrow palate or crowded teeth • Flat feet, easy bruising, slow-healing scars • Family history of “double-jointedness” or airway issues Why it matters: If you recognize yourself in these complaints or signs, it could explain not just your flexibility — but also your sleep, breathing, and airway problems. Knowing is the first step, because then you can work with a physical therapist and explore other strategies that can make a real difference. — I’m Dr. Soroush Zaghi, your go-to expert for sleep, breathing, and airway health.
