What is new in dystonia treatment? Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that lead to abnormal movement and twisted and distorted posture. It can be local effecting for example the hand or neck, regional or in the worst cases the entire body. The patient progressively loses control and cannot stop their muscles from contracting. You can imagine how this negatively effects quality of life. There is no cure and the exact reason why a person develops dystonia is unclear. However new research is suggesting novel avenues for treatment. Researchers have discovered impaired function of the inner ear in many patients suffering from dystonia. Based on this research, a treatment using specific sounds was found to reduce involuntary neck muscle contractions by up to 44%. A very encouraging finding for patients suffering from dystonia. Other researchers discovered that neck range of motion could be improved, and tremor reduced by specific eye movements. Another group of researchers reported that some of the abnormalities found in the brain and spinal cord of dystonia patients might be reversed through a specific type of spinal cord stimulation. In our office we have combined these novel treatment concepts with highly tailored exercises and the results of this approach has been amazing. After years of suffering a number of our dystonia patients have shown rapid improvement in terms of reduced involuntary muscle contraction, leading to increased range of motion and reduced tremor. Most importantly the improved muscle control leads to improved quality of life for these patients. ~ Dr. George W. Kukurin
