PULL MY DAISY (music video) by Vide0Head

I believe in Halloween as being a time where people dress up as their ideal selves, or id and alter ego. I like the idea that people can use the opportunity to reinvent them selves as an idea of themselves or an avatar of something that they see as their inner essence. This night will always be a very fond memory of my joyous friend Barbara the daisy. The September 11 attacks on the world trade center just happened a month before, and I remember people wondering if it was ok to enjoy Halloween. I was not going to get dressed and go out because I was feeling really sad about what happened. But my friend Barbara insisted that we needed to spread love and peace. And that is why she decided she was going to be a daisy for Halloween, "because daisies are flowers filled with joy and love". So she convinced me to dress up, and I decided to do a theme to our costumes by dressing up as a beatnik, as a character from a classic beatnik movie called "PULL MY DAISY". I couldn't find a set of bongos though, so I settled on carrying around a copy of ON THE ROAD by Jack Kerouac. We decided instead of going to the parade or parties we would just walk around the Village near Macdougal street----where the beats lived----and sit in coffee houses and cafes, and just interact with other New Yorkers on the street and spread some love. Barbara was right it really lifted me out of my melancholia, I could see the doubt in other peoples eyes as to weather it was ok to feel joy again after what just happened only a few miles away, but I could see that people really needed the release from grief. What made the experience even more strange was the fact that you could still smell the burning buildings in the air from where we were. A funny and awkward moment came when I videoed Barbara with a guy who I thought was dressed in a priest costume, but who was in fact a real priest, I wish I had known this before I made a series of off-colored jokes about priests while I was filming him with Barbara. At the end of the video you see Barbara getting in a rickshaw bike to head home to Staten Island, she needed to get to the Staten Island Ferry but the trains were still not running downtown past ground zero, so she decided to get on a rickshaw bike, and he drove her past ground zero to get to the ferry. I imagined in my mind how wonderful it must have been to see this woman in a flower costume waving to the people working at the wreckage site. It brings a tear to my eyes every time I see the bike fading away in the distance with my friend----the daisy----off on her journey to spread peace, hope and joy to the city dwellers in our time of need. To me this was a kind of super hero costume.
