Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the condition of infrapatellar bursitis of the knee. Follow me on twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/DrEbraheim_UTMC Find me on Instagram @OrthoInitiative Bursitis of the Knee Infrapatellar Several bursae are seen around the knee: suprapatellar, prepatellar (most common), infrapatellar, and pes anserine. Infrapatellar bursitis is rare and often referred to as “clergyman’s knee”. The bursa may become inflamed or injured by kneeling on a hard surface such as with construction type occupations (carpentry, etc). The location of infrapatellar bursitis is below the patella (knee cap) and this location is usually rare. This may cause problems in the differential diagnosis. You can see how the location for both of these bursitis types is different, however the treatment for both is probably the same. Treatment for infrapatellar bursitis includes anti-inflammatory medication, ice therapy, aspiration (send the fluid for culture and crystals), or antibiotics (if infection is suspected or confirmed). Surgery (usually debridement and excision of the bursa) is done if the conservative treatment fails or if the bursa is infected.
