Poorvi is standing in the balcony playing with a rat she has caught.) Poorvi, age 24 – (laughing and playing) Ahhhh haha haha, what a fat and nice rat. It seems like it really takes good care of its health. Sweet little rat. Narration – Poorvi was holding the rat by its tail in her balcony and swinging it around while playing with it. Black crows were flying in the sky above her and it was evening time. While Poorvi was still playing with the rat, Hema, a woman standing in the balcony of the neighboring house, saw her and became very frightened by Poorvi’s strange behavior. Hema, age 50 – (speaking to herself nervously) Oh God, why is Poorvi feeding that rat in her balcony as if it were a small child? The behavior of people in this house always seems very strange to me. Sometimes one thing, sometimes another. Should I ask her if she can’t tell the difference between a rat and toys? Narration – After saying this, Hema called out to Poorvi. Hema, age 50 – (calling out) Poorvi! Hey Poorvi! Poorvi, age 24 – (speaking in a creepy tone) Yes, tell me. Hema, age 50 – (nervously) Why are you speaking like that? And why are you playing with that rat? Since when do girls play with rats? Throw it away! Poorvi, age 24 – (looking at her) What did you say? I should throw away this cute little rat? But it’s so adorable. Here, you see it too. Hema, age 50 – (refusing) No, no, no! Don’t throw it toward me. Narration – Hema got scared hearing Poorvi’s words, but Poorvi did not step back. She picked up the rat and threw it into Hema’s balcony. Hema screamed loudly and ran inside her house. Hema, age 50 – (running) Oh God save me! This girl is crazy! Poorvi, age 24 – (looking) Why did she run away? It was so cute. (going downstairs) Now I should go downstairs. Mother must be waiting for me. Narration – Saying this, Poorvi went downstairs. Poorvi was a young girl who lived with her parents, brother, and aunt. Her entire family respected her mother Aastha a lot. Whatever Aastha told someone to do, they obeyed without question. Their strange behavior often troubled the neighbors. People outside the house noticed how unusual their actions and conversations were. Today too, Poorvi had been playing with a rat. After playing with it, she came downstairs into the house. Poorvi, age 24 – (looking) Oh no, Mom! Why have you made everyone stand here? Aastha, age 50 – (making a face) So you’re here? Took you long enough. Now listen. Sudha, age 40 – (listening) Yes, tell me, sister-in-law. Aastha, age 50 – (telling them) Ritesh, you were saying you wanted to go out to eat with your friends today, right? Ritesh, age 28 – Yes, Mom. Aastha, age 50 – (staring into his eyes) You will not go anywhere. Ritesh, age 28 – (accepting) Alright Mom, whatever you think is right. Aastha, age 50 – I said you’re not going anywhere. And Sudha, go cook food. Make chicken pakoras, paneer tikka, and semolina halwa. Sudha, age 40 – Okay, sister-in-law. Aastha, age 50 – (to Himesh) Himesh ji, you said your shoulders and back were hurting, right? So fine, you won’t sleep now. My shoulders and back are hurting too. Come and massage them. And you, Poorvi, go throw the garbage at the big garbage dump. And remember, not the small one—the big pile only. Poorvi, age 24 – (obediently leaving) Okay Mom. Narration – Aastha gave everyone instructions while staring into their eyes as if she were controlling them. As soon as she spoke, everyone began working like puppets and obeyed her. This was not the first time. Everyone in the house always danced to Aastha’s commands. --- Scene 2 Narration – Everyone was busy with their work that day, but Aastha was in a separate room. The room was dark. There were spider webs everywhere and even a skeleton placed there. Aastha, wearing a black sari, ash on her forehead, messy hair, and a strange appearance, was sitting there chanting mantras. Aastha, age 50 – (speaking to herself) Chamundayai Namah… hahaha… wonderful! Today’s ritual is complete too. Now everyone will dance even more on my commands. I should leave before anyone suspects I’m not in the house.
