The man who defended the legendary mob boss John Gotti has died aged 77. . While John Gotti became known as The Teflon Don after a string of acquittals in the 1980s, it was Bruce Cutler behind the strategy — the man crafting the arguments that kept Gotti free. “He was tough — physically tough. Big personality. Big courage. And when he cross-examined a witness, the jury was his.” Cutler graduated cum laude from Hamilton College, where he played both football and lacrosse. He was influenced early on by his father, Murray Cutler — a detective turned lawyer. Bruce began his own career as a relentless assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, before switching sides — defending the very criminals he once prosecuted. Born and raised in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, Cutler spent years working alongside famed attorney Barry Slotnick before stepping out on his own. Through the height of the Gotti years, Cutler was a constant presence — at his client’s side in the courtroom, on the courthouse steps, and splashed across front pages across the city. Former mobster Anthony Ruggiano Jr. said Cutler wasn’t just fond of Gotti — he admired him. “I think he wanted to be John Gotti,” Ruggiano said in a Netflix documentary. “He dressed like him, talked like him, even kissed cheeks like a wiseguy.” But in 1992, the Teflon finally wore off. Gotti was convicted of murder and racketeering, and in 2002, he died of throat cancer while serving a life sentence. Cutler, though, stayed true to his larger-than-life image.
